Ms Sophia Ch’ng was appointed as a Board Member of Private Pension Administrator Malaysia on 9 November 2023.

Sophia Ch’ng is currently an independent non executive director with Cagamas Berhad and Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarge Berhad. She is a member of Board Risk Committee for Cagamas Berhad. She is the chair of Board Risk Committee and a member of Audit Committee for Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga Berhad.

Sophia Ch’ng held various key positions in the financial services industry. She was the CFO of AmMetLife Insurance Berhad. Prior to this, she was the CFO of Zurich Insurance Malaysia Berhad. Before this, she was the Senior Vice President and Head of Actuarial, Finance, Strategy Planning, Product Management and Product Pricing for Great Eastern Life Assurance Malaysia Berhad.

Currently, she is a director in an actuarial consultancy firm and a consulting actuary in a university. She has performed works for Malaysia, Bahrain, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Philippines, Singapore, etc.

She was also the first woman and first Malaysian to win the ASEAN Insurance Council’s Award for Young Managers in 2009. She has authored two books for the Malaysian Insurance Institute: “Life Insurance Products, Sales and Operations – Regulatory Environment” and “Life Insurance Companies – Accounting and Financial Reporting”.

Since 2004, she has been involved in various Board committee meetings, including the Main Board Committee, Risk Management Committee, Audit Committee, Nomination and Remuneration Committee. Her expertise and knowledge in strategy, actuarial, finance and risk management has enabled her to provide useful insights for Board’s decision making.

In her C-suite roles, Sophia also handled various important projects: company blueprint, balanced scorecard implementation, product strategy, Agency Transformation Project, asset liability management, capital management, staff optimization, legacy mis-selling resolution, SOX (Sarbanes Oxley) implementation and LEAN process improvements. Besides that, she has also worked in various mergers and acquisitions and new company set-up projects, including InsurTech.

Sophia holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from Macquarie University and she holds two professional qualifications. She is Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) and a Fellow of the Actuarial Society Malaysia. She is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a Chartered Accountant of Malaysian Institute of Accountants. She is a past President of Actuarial Society of Malaysia and currently serves in the council. She served in various committees in Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (Technical and Product Services Committee, Finance and Administration Committee).
